Shopify For Shopify merchants

Shopify’s native returns have no photo upload. That is the gap.

Customer accounts can take a return request. They cannot take a photo of the item. That is why damaged claims still bounce into email — and why the image you eventually get is the easy kind to fake.

As of September 2026, Shopify’s built-in self-serve return form — in customer accounts and the Shop app — has no file or image attachment. Apps cannot inject an upload into that form. Separate returns portals and customer-account UI extensions can collect files in their own flow. They are not the native request.

What native gives you

A request, a reason, a note. Then you are on your own.

Self-serve returns

Turn the feature on and a signed-in customer can ask to return a delivered item, or cancel one that has not shipped. Shopify records the request on the order.

Reason codes and instructions

You can set rules, windows, and a note that tells the customer what to do next. “Email us photos of the damage” is the workaround merchants have been using for years.

No attachment field

There is still no image upload on the native request. Damaged, defective, and wrong-item claims arrive as text. The evidence is a second conversation.

The cost of the gap

A follow-up email is not an evidence process.

Another round trip

The customer thinks they have finished. You write back asking for photos. Some reply. Some do not. The claim sits while you wait.

Evidence lands in an inbox

JPEGs in a thread have no session, no hash, and no link back to the return besides whatever the agent remembered to file. That is a poor audit trail if a chargeback or a supplier claim follows.

You accept whatever arrives

A gallery pick, a screenshot, a marketplace listing image, or a generated “cracked screen.” The native flow gave you no way to ask for anything better at the moment of the request.

AI made the workaround worse

The email-a-photo habit was already weak. Generative images made it the cheapest path to a returnless refund.

The fix

Collect the photos on a VerifiedReturn link. Keep Shopify for the return itself.

You do not replace Shopify returns. You add the missing step: live capture from the customer’s device, attached to the order or RMA they already have.

01

Put the store link in the returns email

Shopify already sends a notification when a request comes in. Paste the VerifiedReturn URL into that template, or into the return instructions customers see before they submit.

02

Or send it when you review the request

For damaged and defective reasons, reply with the link before you approve. The customer types the order number. Photos attach to that reference.

03

Or drop it into Loop, ReturnGO, or a macro

A button or a custom HTML block is enough. If the platform already knows the RMA, append ?reference= so the field is filled in.

By outcome

Refunds, exchanges, and returnless refunds need different evidence.

Standard refund

You will see the item eventually. Capture still helps when the reason is damage or defect — you decide whether to approve before the parcel comes back, and you have files if you dispute with a supplier.

Exchange

Size and colour swaps often need no photo. Wrong-item and damaged exchanges do. Send the link only on those reasons so you do not add friction to a clean swap.

Returnless refund

The photo is the inspection. A gallery upload is not enough here. Live capture, a score, and an audit trail are the difference between a policy and a hope.

Warranty and damage claims

Same capture, same reference field. The session sits next to the claim if a manufacturer or a carrier asks what you actually saw.

Reliability

Filling the upload gap is also how you resist AI fraud.

Even if Shopify added a file field tomorrow, a “choose from gallery” control would accept a generated JPEG. The missing native upload is one problem. The kind of image you are willing to accept is another.

VerifiedReturn collects the photo at the device, in the session, with integrity signals and a confidence score. That is the evidence Shopify’s form does not ask for, and the reliability a follow-up email cannot give you. Read how AI imagery broke photo-proof returns.

Shopify Works alongside Shopify returns

Stop refunding damage you never saw.

Send one link. Your customer photographs the item live on their phone. You see the damage and whether the photo is real, before you approve the refund.
